The main components of the roof support system are the different types of shields used in longwall mining operations to guard personnel and machines from a collapsing roof. The combination of Shearer, Armoured Face Conveyor and Roof Support Shields is commonly used in longwall mining operations. The shields close the gap which is generated by the extraction cycles of the Shearer.
