Weihenstephan Standards Working Group

The WS Industrial User Group is made up of the market leaders in the food and packaging industry and comprises more than 100 companies, associations, and research institutes. The group is made up of partners from the fields of engineering, IT & automation, and production facilities. The WS Industrial User Group has been developing a standardized communication interface for connecting machines from different domains to higher-level data acquisition systems such as an MES for over 20 years. The WS Industrial User Group is led by the research group Smart Production Systems at the Chair of Brewing and Beverage Technology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
The Smart Production Systems research group focuses on digitizing the food and beverage industry through the research areas of artificial intelligence, multi-agent systems, modeling and simulation, and standardized data and communication interfaces. Particular attention is paid to the scientific consideration of issues that support individual industries in solving current or future challenges. For example, the provision of individualized products in the beverage industry by a decentralized control system and the flexible composition of the required machines is solved with the help of multi-agent systems. Through artificial intelligence, processes are to be optimized and made more efficient across industries with the interaction of standardized collected data. The simulation of various systems in the food and beverage industry aims, on the one hand, to increase energy and media efficiency and, on the other hand, to enable virtual commissioning of process plants using simulation models.
The comprehensive research fields are specifically implemented in teaching and conveyed to students. In addition, the Smart Production Systems research group has many years of experience in the field of machine interfaces and a broadly based competence in consulting and services in the beverage filling field. The Smart Production Systems research group was created after the dissolution of the Chair of Food Packaging Technology (LVT) at TUM.
