Hi,

Can anyone tell me what the OPC DA specification considers as a valid tag name? I.e. which characters are allowed?

More specifically, can I use the ‘§’ character as part of a tag name according to the specification?

I understand some servers or clients will support these special characters, but I’m mostly interested in if this should be supported or not according to the specification. In light of compatibility between systems.

Best regards,

Ronald

The specification does not have any restrictions on ItemIDs, however, using non-printable characters or whitespaces will likely cause IOP issues.

The item ID is a string. It is really at the discretion of the Server Manufacturer as to what the will and will not allow. For example, in my own product we do not allow leading underscores in a user defined tag name as they are used to define internal server/system variables.
