ISO 16484-5 and IEC 62541 – Mapping between BACnet and OPC-UA Presented

04/09/2014

Data-transfer between building automation and ERP-systems becomes easier

Dortmund/Frankfurt/Main., 4.4. 2014. – The BACnet Interest Group Europe and the OPC Foundation presented the new created mapping between BACnet and OPC-UA at the Light+Building. After a year of intense work, the working group leaders, Frank Schubert and Matthias Damm presented the Mapping document to the father of BACnet, H. Michael Newman.

The need for overlapping applications is continuously growing as the industry wants to reduce the energy consumption in their facilities and needs a suitable interaction between production and building control.

The working group´s aim was the creation of a common interface between BACnet and OPC-UA for defined data exchange between industrial and building automation. Setpoint values and actual values taken from the building automation can be imported more easily to the customers’ ERP systems.

After the co-operation agreement signed in 2012, the joint working group started its activities
in the last year. With the current document which was presented, a first big step was taken
to a problem-free data exchange between the two standards. The second step will mean
that, the data from industrial automation systems should be available easier for BACnet
devices.

BACnet and OPC-UA are the world´s leading standards in building automation and
machine-to-machine communication. BA systems like heating, ventilation and air condition
or lighting and safety/security technology can communicate via BACnet. More than 700
manufacturers are listed around the world. OPC-UA has its roots in the world of industrial
and process automation. Together, these two world standards allow for the economical and
ecological optimization for building, installation and process operations.

About the BIG-EU
The BACnet Interest Group Europe (BIG-EU) promotes the use of the global BACnet communication standard ISO 16484-5 in building automation and security technology in Europe. Founded in 1998 by 18 companies from the building automation industry, today the BIG-EU has over 100 members from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, England, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and the USA. The objectives of the BIG-EU are to take into account European interests in the development of the BACnet standard and the exchange of information with the ASHRAE SSPC 135 committee responsible for BACnet, as well as the American BACnet community, and joint marketing, a common standard for qualifications offered and the shared creation of technical guidelines.
