OPC Foundation and OpenFog Consortium Sign Memorandum of Understanding at Hannover Fair
OPC and OpenFog Agree to Collaborate on Technical Specifications around Fog Computing in Industrial Automation
Scottsdale, AZ – April 26, 2016 – The OPC Foundation and the OpenFog Consortium (OpenFog) announce a liaison to collaborate on technical specifications, white papers, guidelines and processes to enable system wide IoT interoperability around manufacturing. Deliverables from this collaboration will result in a cohesive set of standards that will benefit digital factories, as well as the members of both organizations in their pursuit of developing and achieving information integration across the multitude of domains.
The OPC Foundation pursues interoperability in industrial automation by creating and maintaining open specifications that standardize communication of acquired process data, alarm and event records, historical data, and batch data to multi-vendor enterprise systems and between production devices. The goal for OPC is for it to be the foundation for interoperability for moving information vertically from the factory floor through the enterprise of multi-vendor systems as well as providing interoperability between devices on different industrial networks from different vendors.
The OpenFog Consortium is a global nonprofit that is defining and advancing fog technology; developing an OpenFog architecture; demonstrating feasibility and interoperability of new concepts through testbeds; and growing the overall market for fog solutions.
At the Hannover Fair, Thomas J. Burke, President and Executive Director of the OPC Foundation and Matt Vasey, Vice President of Business Development and Treasurer/Secretary of OpenFog Consortium signed a Memorandum of Understanding in which both organizations agree to closely cooperate in the development and marketing of shared deliverables to foster interoperability. Mr. Burke said, “OpenFog provides a unique opportunity for OPC Foundation members and the overall OPC community at large to develop products that leverage fog technology, and development of solutions for interoperable testbeds”.
“The OpenFog Consortium is pleased to work with the OPC Foundation to help ensure a cohesive set of standards around fog computing in manufacturing environments,” said Matt Vasey. “This agreement will eliminate redundant work and will help to build interoperability for digital factories and their suppliers and end users.”
