Scottsdale, AZ, March 7, 2017: The HKI Industrieverband Haus-, Heiz- und Küchentechnik e.V. and the OPC Foundation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Stuttgart as part of the HKI Forum “Profi-Kitchen: standardized, optimized, networked.” The signatories were Andreas Helm, the representative of the HKI Working Group Communication and Head of the Association of Large Kitchen Appliances in the HKI Industry Association of Households, Heating and Kitchen Appliances, and Stefan Hoppe, Global Vice President of the OPC Foundation.
Within the framework of the HKI-Forum “Expertise: standardized, optimized, networked” in Stuttgart, the HKI Industrieverband Haus-, Heiz- und Küchentechnik e.V. and the OPC Foundation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The memorandum aims at the development of standards as well as the development of specifications and architectural models, which ensure the compatibility of all network users in the professional kitchen.
“We are looking forward to working with the OPC Foundation,” says Andreas Helm, Head of the Association of Large Kitchen Appliances of the HKI Industry Association. “The development of a standard of a communication interface for commercial kitchen equipment is the goal of the manufacturing industry of kitchen kitchens organized in the HKI Industry Association. Through the cooperation with the OPC Foundation, whose standard is also mentioned in industry 4.0, for example, we have created a basis for this. “The agreement entered into force on 15 December 2016.
“The cooperation with the HKI Industry Association represents a historic milestone for the OPC Foundation,” said Stefan Hoppe, Global Vice President of the OPC Foundation. “Launched by a few manufacturers in the field of process automation, OPC UA is now a recommendation for RAM 4.0 in the framework of semantic interoperability, which is a key to Industrie 4.0. The HKI Industry Association recognized the potential of OPC UA at an early stage and set it on this standard: the modeling of industrial kitchen appliances enables a secure, plug & play IT connection in the networked and digitized world. ”
“The OPC Foundation is very pleased to establish this important alliance with HKI industry Association”, says Thomas J Burke, OPC Foundation President. “The intention of this alliance is to provide modeling of commercial kitchen equipment leveraging the OPC UA technology as the infrastructure to provide information integration in the ever-changing world of the Internet of Things. The business value proposition of this cooperation is well positioned and aligned with the goals of Industrie 4.0, retrofitting the proprietary interfaces that exist today providing seamless interoperability across disparate devices and applications through automation to provide best-of-breed services to address the complex requirements of food production and processing.”

Why a standard that describes the communication interface for commercial kitchen equipment?
The integration of professional kitchen equipment into BIM and other IT networks is becoming increasingly important. Proprietary interfaces in hospitality, hospitality, and community services are barriers to all process stakeholders. A standard that defines the communication equipment interface for commercial kitchen equipment is a non-proprietary communications protocol based on existing open IT and Internet standards. It describes the bi-directional communication between large-scale kitchen equipment, IT equipment and local and global networks. Internet-based services based on this enable flexibility, automation and quality assurance in the processing of life as well as the processes involved in it.
